Horse and Buggy Theology
A buggy is a very nice device to look at; it’s efficient and practical. But unless you hook your horse up to it, it is of no use. The truth is like that buggy. If you don’t take it out of the barn, it’s of no practical use!
We have Reformation theology: the Gospel, salvation and justification by faith alone, in Christ alone and through the Scriptures alone. But if it doesn’t get out of our churches, we are just fattening ourselves up on doctrine until we are obese and stagnant, a status-quo Christians. You don’t want your Christian legacy to be like that, do you?
When I was a boy raised down on the farm, we had a barn called "the wagon shed." Tucked way in the back of the barn were two buggies. One was a buckboard used in the early days as a sort of pickup truck to carry smaller items. The other was a "surrey," used by my grandfather to take his family to town and to church on Sundays. Both were very important but neither were of any use until we took them out of the barn! My dad on some Sundays would do that, just reminiscing on the "good old days."
We don’t have to transport our supplies any longer in a buggy but we do have the truth of the Gospel, just sitting in the barn where it is of no effect! Moses had the truth on tablets of stone, but he took them down the mountain to the people. The Apostles, Paul, Peter, and Thomas, had the Gospel of grace and they hooked their horses up to it and rode it all over the known world.
Oh, Christian! People desperately need this remedy for sin or face an anguishing eternity if they don’t get this Gospel cure of the truth. Jesus says, "Go," "Even as God has sent Me so I send you." "Let the redeemed of the Lord say so."
We can’t just complain about the failures of our culture with the Gospel truth sitting in our barn. Hook up your "buggy" to this Gospel truth and get it out of your church today! It will have a life-changing effect! The truth conquers everything — Vincit Omnia Veritas.
