When Democracy Fails
I think we all associate Christianity with democracy. The two just seem to go together. George Washington, speaking on democracy, said, “Can it be that Providence (God) has not connected the permanent felicity of a nation with its virtue … which ennobles human nature.” In other words, God, democracy, nobility and virtue go together. After all, we were founded as a Christian nation anyway.
Simply speaking, Christianity inspired democracy because Christ proclaims, “If the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed” (Jn 8:36). But Jesus’ words went even beyond just spiritual freedom from sin. It is part of the image of God stamped on us all at conception. It is part of God himself. Freedom to choose is part of human nature. Apart from God’s sovereignty man is free to choose between Christ and a godless future, good and evil, between freedom and tyranny.
However, this all being true, there is a giant flaw in democracy. Democracy is wielded by the will of the majority. As long as the majority strive for virtue (the characteristics of God), it progresses nicely toward “nobility.” But what happens to virtue when the majority turns corrupt—when lying, deception and “spinning” the truth become the norm? Then democracy fails both the people and God.
Right now, in 2020 we are facing such an issue—the tyranny of the minority is ready to become the majority! Once this happens, John Adams warned, “A constitution once changed thus from freedom, can never restore liberty. Liberty is lost forever.” How can this be happening?! We are Americans! We have a long-standing Christian heritage. However, back at our founding we had giants watching the gates, keeping the conscience of Americans tuned to the Word of God and the truth. Whitefield, the Wesleys, Jonathan Edwards, D.L. Moody and others pricked our morality and spread the gospel. And the Holy Spirit regenerated many. Although we have many great preachers today, the virtue that used to prevail in the majority has yielded to a minority lacking the ennobling virtue that Washington praised. Satan is focusing in on their agenda in a big way: the murder of babies, gay “marriage”, freedom of religion, transgenderism, political correctness and others. To prove this, the whole democratic party approves officially of these diabolical practices! Democracy as the Founders intended is failing. Thank God He has given us Trump — a breath of fresh air amidst the stench of decay. Can we reset our moral compass? There is hope that good will overcome evil in our nation. Pray hard to that end.
